More than 30 Years of Research

Research is at the heart of the Cigéo project. For more than three decades, Andra and its scientific partners have been developing the knowledge, methods and technologies necessary to assess the feasibility and long-term safety of deep geological disposal for high-level waste (HLW) and intermediate-level long-lived waste (ILW-LL).

Today, Cigéo builds on extensive research conducted across a wide range of scientific disciplines and supported by dedicated research facilities, experiments and international cooperation programmes.

Why Was This Research Programme Launched?

The management of high-level and long-lived radioactive waste raises unique scientific and technical challenges. Because these waste categories remain hazardous for very long periods of time, they require solutions capable of ensuring the long-term protection of people and the environment.
In 1991, the French Parliament launched a research programme to investigate potential management solutions for the most hazardous radioactive waste. Three complementary approaches were studied:

  • Deep geological disposal;
  • Long-term storage;
  • Partitioning and transmutation.

Over the following years, research and expert assessments contributed to the progressive development of scientific knowledge on these different options and ultimately supported the choice of deep geological disposal as France's reference solution for HLW and ILW-LL waste.

Building Scientific Knowledge Across Disciplines

Research conducted for Cigéo brings together expertise from a wide range of scientific and technical fields.
These include:

  • Geology and hydrogeology;
  • Geochemistry;
  • Materials science;
  • Environmental sciences;
  • Monitoring technologies;
  • Repository engineering;
  • Digital modelling and simulation;
  • Human and social sciences.

Together, these disciplines contribute to understanding the geological environment, designing repository components, evaluating long-term performance and supporting safety assessments.

Research Infrastructure and Scientific Tools

Over the years, Andra has developed a range of scientific tools and research facilities to support the Cigéo programme.

Underground Research Laboratory

The Underground Research Laboratory in Meuse/Haute-Marne provides direct access to the Callovo-Oxfordian clay formation at repository depth. It allows scientists and engineers to carry out in situ experiments and to study the behaviour of the geological formation under real conditions.

The Perennial Environmental Observatory (OPE)

Established in 2007, the Perennial Environmental Observatory (OPE) contributes to the long-term understanding of the environment surrounding the project area. It provides valuable data on ecosystems, water resources, biodiversity and environmental evolution before, during and after project development.

Digital Modelling and Simulation

Numerical models are used to study repository evolution over time and to evaluate geological, thermal, hydraulic, mechanical and chemical processes. These tools play an important role in long-term safety assessments and repository design.

From Research to Industrial Solutions

Scientific knowledge acquired through research contributes directly to the development of the Cigéo project.
Research results are used to support:

  • Repository design;
  • Waste package development;
  • Disposal cell design;
  • Monitoring systems;
  • Closure systems;
  • Long-term safety assessments.

Numerous experiments, demonstrators and technological tests have also been conducted to validate engineering concepts and assess their performance under representative conditions.

Research for Future Generations

Some of the challenges associated with radioactive waste management extend over timescales that go far beyond those usually considered in industrial projects.
Research therefore also addresses questions related to:

  • Long-term geological evolution;
  • Environmental change;
  • Knowledge preservation;
  • Memory transmission;
  • The relationship between society and radioactive waste management.

These activities help ensure that scientific understanding continues to contribute to the safe management of radioactive waste over generations.

Research Through Cooperation

The Cigéo research programme relies on collaboration with universities, research organisations, technical institutes and industrial partners.
Scientific cooperation also plays an important role in advancing knowledge. Through participation in international research programmes, scientific networks and peer reviews, Andra contributes to and benefits from the collective expertise developed worldwide on geological disposal and radioactive waste management.

A Continuing Scientific Effort

More than thirty years of research have contributed to building the scientific basis of the Cigéo project. This work continues today through ongoing studies, experiments, monitoring programmes and international cooperation activities.
By continuously improving knowledge and understanding, research contributes to the development, safety and long-term performance of the project.
