It is with great sadness that we have learned today the passing of Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the IAEA since 1 December 2009.

For many years, Mr. Amano has been active in promoting greater public participation in atomic energy decisions.

During his two terms, he supported the initiatives for the sustainable management of radioactive waste with a view to limiting its burden on future generations and firmly positioned the IAEA alongside member states in this regard.

On several occasions, Mr. Amano has expressed his curiosity and interest in Andra projects. In September 2015, he personally invited Pierre-Marie Abadie, Andra's CEO, to present the Cigéo project at the 59th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, during the session devoted to the "development of solutions for the deep geological disposal of high-level waste and spent nuclear fuel". Mr. Amano emphasized the soundness of the technical and scientific bases for geological disposal projects.

Subsequently, we received Mr. Amano on two occasions:

  •  in October 2016 at Andra's headquarters in Chatenay Malabry for a long exchange with Pierre-Marie ABADIE;
  •  in October 2017 at the Meuse Haute Marne Facility for a visit of the Andra Underground Reserarch Laboratory in Bure.

Our thoughts and condolences naturally go to his family, his staff and colleagues at the IAEA.
