Andra’s participation in the “Artemis” international review

On October 1-10, Andra participated in an expert capacity in the “Artemis” international review in Warsaw in the presence of representatives of the Polish ministries, regulatory authority and organisation in charge of waste management (ZUOP).

The review, held under the supervision of the IAEA and covering the general programme for spent fuel and radioactive waste management in Poland, was in response to a request from the government. Following analysis of documents submitted prior to the review and of the presentations and discussions between the experts and representatives, a preliminary opinion was prepared and the conclusions and recommendations were officially presented to representatives of the government.

France requests an “Artemis” international review

More than 20 countries have already officially applied to the IAEA for an Artemis review. France’s strategy will be the second to be covered by the review in 2018. This will help fine-tune the exercise procedures and policies to be implemented for other countries that are yet to be reviewed. Andra is actively participating in preparations for the review, overseen by the Directorate-General for Energy and Climate, by supplying documents. Andra will also serve as a representative of France’s radioactive waste management organisation when the review is held.

Focus on “Artemis”

The IAEA has developed an expert review dedicated to:

  • management of radioactive waste and spent fuel,
  • control of radionuclide releases into the environment,
  • decommissioning of nuclear facilities,
  • environmental remediation of radiologically contaminated sites.

The review is a community obligation (Article 14-3 of European Directive 2011/70/EURATOM), applicable to all the countries concerned. The directive recommends holding independent periodic reviews to benefit from an outside opinion on national policy concerning management of spent fuel and radioactive waste.
